During my exploration of ecclesiastical goldwork embroidery, I stumbled upon some fascinating pieces that used string padding to create textured borders and other motifs. I thought it would be fun to experiment with this technique, which in modern goldwork embroidery is most often seen in Russian goldwork, but during the Renaissance could be found throughout continental Europe.

I used several pieces from the MET museum for inspiration, which can be seen here:

In each of these pieces, string is stitched to the ground fabric in parallel before the gold is added. The gold is then couched over the string in a basketweave pattern. For my string padding experiments, I used velvet, cotton string, and synthetic 371 gold threads made by Benton and Johnson which were couched down with silk thread. Laying down the string padding over the velvet actually made it easier to apply the gold, which was an unexpected and serendipitous result!

It was fun to explore this different facet of goldwork embroidery!

  1. As usual, your work is exquisite!! When you write and talk about it, your passion shines. You make goldwork approachable. I just LOVE this basket weave and can’t wait to try it out for myself.
    Thank you!
