I have been wanting to reproduce an enameled reliquary box since I started dabbling in enamels some 15-20 years ago.  Covid provided me with many hours of time at home to work on projects and over the course of the last year I have been chipping away at this project.  It is loosely based on a casket in the British Museum depicting scenes of courtly love, and consists of 5 enameled copper plaques that are affixed to a wooden box and lid.    I replicated the image from one of the sides, the other plaques are modelled after illuminations from the same time period.

The copper plaques were first etched with acid with a resist to create hollows in which to lay the enamels.  The enamels were then painted in, and the plaques fired in a kiln.  I tend to do much smaller jewelry-sized pieces, so the plaques were a bit out of my comfort zone.  I had some issues with managing colors in the kiln, but am overall happy with how the project has come together.

  1. Intricate! With a technique like that, you get no do-overs… it must have been nerve-wracking to work on this! It looks fantastic, like a museum piece. Well done indeed!

  2. I’m so glad you were able to find many round-to-its to create this.
This is a lovely piece, thank you so much for sharing!
