Yvette of Stonemarche — Italian Cross Stitch Trim

  • Name: Yvette of Stonemarche
  • Project title: Italian Cross Stitch Trim
  • Location: Barony of Stonemarche
  • Category: textiles — embroidery

This trim was based on an extant piece of embroidery now in the Victoria and Albert Museum from the 1500s Italy (accession number: 863A-1897). I thought the flowers and bee-like repeating pattern was beautiful and wanted to try and recreate the feel of it.

I used a 14ct Aida cloth ribbon from France and 4 strands of cotton thread to create the cross stitches.

I designed the pattern myself using a counted cross stitch pattern app Stitchly where I could design my own pattern. My trim had a lower count than the linen that appeared to be used in the original piece, so I had to modify the pattern to get the approximation of the original design.
