Katrein Topffer – The Landing of the Danes

I chose to try making my own paint for the first time. I have painted with acrylics and oils for years, but always ready made. I recently started working on illuminated cards and painting with gouache, again ready made. I just have never been able to try to make my own paint from the raw materials, it has always intimidated me. So, for this challenge I decided to take the leap. I purchased some pigment at Pennsic, looked up some instructions and proceeded to make egg tempera paint and use it.

This is a Work In Progress. My father passed away 3 weeks ago so I haven’t been able to work on this since Pennsic, like I had hoped. However, I wanted to go ahead and send in what I have been able to start and what I have learned so far, in the hopes I can get some feedback as I continue exploring. My original plan was to do two separate paintings with one using yolk and one using glair. I have only been able to start the one painting but will go ahead and continue with my original plan in the next couple weeks.

Find the entire work here.

  1. I’m sorry to hear of your loss, but glad you were still able to enter your work. I admire that you have embarked on an art form that was intimidating for you. It looks like you are off to a wonderful start. I look forward to seeing more in the future.
