Amalie von Hohensee, Barony of Stonemarche

Thanks to Athena’s Thimble and Arachne’s Web, the EK embroidery and lace guilds, I’ve become increasingly interested in trying out lacemaking. After briefly dipping my toes in embroidered laces, I wanted to try my hand at something even more foreign – bobbin lace! Because getting out of your comfort zone for a while is good for artisans of all levels :).
I found a wonderful bobbin lace sampler tutorial online (see below for link), which walked me through increasingly challenging lace patterns, and left me feeling excited to try making a longer piece of lace to embellish a garment.
The pattern used 12 bobbins, which were already loaded with a black cotton thread when they were gifted to me. Since I didn’t yet have a bobbin lace pillow, I just used a padded mailer, which worked surprisingly well, and was a great way to get a feel for this new craft without having to invest a lot of cash to get started.

Here’s a link to a great lace YouTube channel I also found helpful: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCc7yf-Bs0tgMWmiITLf-kyA
Thank you for sharing this! Bobbin lace seems so scary sometimes but there are so many great resources online, this is looking amazing already! I can’t wait to see what you do next!
This is beautiful! I love how you jumped in. I am sure I would have had a tangled mess. Lol Thank you for sharing. I can not wait to see what you do next.
Bobbin lace blows my mind… You are amazing! I like that you are trying different artforms, and learning a variety of skills. I also appreciate that you “made it work” without a pillow, showing that you can do art on a budget!
Pretty! If you and it will be at Pennsic, please shoot me a note – my partner Alina is dabbling in bobbin lace and I would love to take some closeup photos of this piece. 😀
Good thinking using the padded mailer! I wouldn’t have thought of that. I have down some bobbin lace in the past; yours is going well! Have fun with it! 🙂
Yep …. I am still scared of lace! But I love seeing what you are up to and the lovely things you create.
