This piece is a recreation of an extant Spanish Farthingale, dated to the 1580’s. The Spanish farthingale was a cone shaped hoop shirt worn under the full skirts of the Elizabethan era. Geometry was used to approximate the shape and dimensions of the backside of the missing skirt, and then recreated using period methods and materials.
Woah, cool! I haven’t done a lot of research into farthingales, so it’s really great to see yours! It looks like it would take a lot of work to create. What type of boning/stiffening did you use for the hoops, and what type of fabric is it? I’m so curious to know more!
Underlayers…an unappreciated aspect of our total presentation. Nice!
Yay, underwear! Beautiful job, Ellynor!
Really beautiful and precise project. Love it!
I love the experimental archeology aspect of this project; “Geometry was used to approximate the shape and dimensions of the backside of the missing skirt, and then recreated using period methods and materials.” Well done!
It’s lovely that you took so much care with a layer that isn’t even meant to be seen. Foundation layers are so important, and too often neglected. Thank you for exploring and presenting this!
