Recreation of 17th century tobacco pipes. Warning- smoking is bad for you. Clay pipes (iron-free, white firing clay) made in a hand-carved mold and then fired in a small kiln.
What a fun project, love the pipes, and love the pictures of the process. Where did you source your clay? Also, how did you get them so uniform! Great project and thank you for sharing!

Thank you for your kind words. I sourced the clay from a local SCA pottery maker but it is from Portland Pottery. They stock this particular variety. As to uniformity, that’s all from the mold. I’ve been a metal and woodworker for close to 30 years and do much of what I do by hand. Taking time to carve the mold and making adjustments as I went really helped. Thank you!

This is so interesting! I’d seen these types of pipes before, but I never knew how they were made or that they dated back further than the American colonial era. Beautifully crafted! Thank you for sharing them!
I love that this is as much a wood-working project as a ceramics project. It’s always great to see people making the tools to make the things.
